Lorenz Wagner – the likeable footwear pioneer from Jetzendorf

LO – WA as in Lorenz Wagner. The initials of the company’s founder, Lorenz Wagner, once gave the LOWA brand its name. Since then, the company – which began in 1923 in Jetzendorf, Bavaria, making handmade traditional Bavarian shoes – has developed into a global brand for exclusive hiking and trekking boots. To this day, LOWA remains headquartered in Jetzendorf, approximately 50 km north-west of Munich. LOWA shoes are the result of a company history in which unique quality, outstanding service, constant innovation and the founder’s fascination with the mountains have always played a key role. As a result, LOWA hiking boots remain, to this day, synonymous for many mountain enthusiasts with the joy of reaching the summit, the mountain experience and adventure.

Where are LOWA hiking boots manufactured?

LOWA hiking boots are manufactured exclusively in Europe, primarily at the company’s headquarters in Jetzendorf. Further production facilities are located in Italy, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. For the company’s management and its approximately 250 employees, the production site in Germany symbolises a long-standing company tradition and the preservation of traditional values.

How good are LOWA hiking boots?

LOWA simply more … The brand’s slogan sums it up perfectly. LOWA hiking boots offer superior comfort and are manufactured through many intricate individual steps, some of which involve meticulous handcrafting. They are characterised by high-quality materials, an anatomical fit and an ergonomic footbed. In addition, LOWA trekking boots are breathable, waterproof, remarkably durable and stand out thanks to their distinctive design. As sports and hiking boots, they are shoes for life and faithful companions for every passionate mountaineer.

The Renegade GTX® Mid, for instance, has become a cult classic that, even after two decades, still enjoys great popularity amongst trekkers. And that’s hardly surprising, as LOWA invests a great deal of time and research into the production of outdoor footwear, regularly has its LOWA trekkers tested by experienced mountaineers and alpinists, and in this way gains valuable insights for the development of new hiking boots. Each LOWA boot features specially designed soles and lasts; the leather used for the upper and lining comes from selected suppliers. The same applies to the GORE-TEX® used in the boots. The All Terrain Sport range also includes a ‘Vegan Collection’, which is manufactured entirely without leather or animal wool.

What makes LOWA women’s hiking boots stand out?

With LOWA Women, the manufacturer has launched a collection of hiking boots designed to cater for the specific anatomy of women’s feet. Features include a soft upper collar, a specially padded tongue, LOWA women’s lasts, and mid-soles and insoles designed for women. These models are identified by the product code suffix ‘Ws’.

LOWA hiking boots: Which size?

The key factor in choosing the right size is the foot length in mm. Based on foot length, the manufacturer recommends adding 15 mm for adults and 12 mm for children. If you wish, you can also make use of our free advice helpline.

How do you look after LOWA outdoor shoes?

LOWA shoes are renowned for their exceptional durability and will reliably see you through wind, rain, ice and snow. However, even extremely robust, high-quality materials need a little care to remain in good condition and retain their functionality for a long time. This includes proper drying, a thorough clean, waterproofing, maintenance and appropriate storage.

Preparation: LOWA hiking boots should be left to dry in a well-ventilated room, but not near any sources of heat. To ensure they dry properly and are well looked after, it is advisable to remove the insole and laces.

Basic cleaning: First, brush the boots thoroughly so that the leather regains its air permeability and breathability. Next, clean your LOWA shoes with a brush and warm water. If they are very dirty, we recommend using lukewarm soapy water or a shoe cleaning product. This opens the pores of the leather and should therefore be rinsed out thoroughly after cleaning.

Waterproofing: When waterproofing, your LOWA trainers should be slightly damp. After about a day, the waterproofing takes full effect, making your LOWA Trekkers water- and dirt-repellent once more. The waterproofing treatment should be repeated every 3 weeks to maintain the breathability of the hiking boots.

Care: A wax cream or wax emulsion is suitable for caring for outdoor shoes; this should be worked into the leather using a soft brush. The same applies to shoes with a GORE-TEX® membrane.
